Abc pest control2/20/2023 ![]() If you plant Salvias, Sage or Rosemary, you'll never go wrong and common herbs in the carrot family - things like Dill and Fennel and Coriander - these are the cream of the crop. But apart from pollinators, they'll bring in beneficial insects like Lacewings and Hoverflies and they're really important for controlling aphids. Another example is the flowering turnip, Mazuma and also Mustard are wonderful. ![]() Their simple flowers are full of nectar and pollen. Members of the cabbage family are magnets for pollinators. A flower that looks plain white or yellow to us might be an iridescent landing field in the eye, or eyes, of an insect. Insects see a different spectrum of light which is invisible to the human eye. They're looking for particular plants that provide pollen or nectar. While you and I might like to look at a garden full of flowers, the insects aren't necessarily looking for the prettiest garden in town. Plants of all kinds draw beneficial insects, but to attract specific ones, it's good to know their tastes and what they look for in a plant. I'm planting a second row with tomatoes and mustard and I'm planting a third row with just Cherry Tomatoes and that will be my control. I'm planting one row with Cherry Tomatoes and Marigold. I think it's time to put that to the test. I've heard that planting Marigolds alongside crops will deter nematodes. The only problem was, I'd lost the whole season's worth of crops and I'd rather not do that again. I dug them in, they rotted and it worked - I controlled the nematodes. Last year, I sowed the whole of my vegetable garden with French Marigolds. ![]() They're particularly fond of tomatoes and as a result, I haven't been able to grow them in my garden for a year. Nematodesįor a number of years now, I've done battle with my nemesis - the Nematode - a microscopic worm-like creature that works its way into the roots of plants, causing them to swell and distort which eventually leads to the death of the plant. But inevitably, whenever we plant, we'll always attract less welcome insects into our gardens, so I'm focusing on pest control using plants. ![]() For example, a few months ago, I planted a flower border with flowers that attract pollinating insects into my garden and my crops have benefitted ever since. Whenever I garden, I try to consider the bigger picture. ![]()
